Labor wins Kingswood by-election – Bristol Live

Labor retained its seat in Kingswood in the South Gloucestershire Council by-election. Julie Snelling received 1,911 votes ahead of Conservative Gagan Singh with 792, Lib Dem James Corrigan with 590 and the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition’s Amy Sage with 178.

The poll, which coincided with the general election on Thursday July 4, was triggered by the resignation of former councilor and cabinet member Leigh Ingham, who successfully stood to be the new Labor MP for Stafford. Kingswood ward has two councillors, the other being Cllr Sean Rhodes, who replaced Cllr Ingham in the council’s cabinet as community and locality member after she resigned to run for Parliament.

In contrast to the huge swings seen in the general election from the Conservatives to Labour, there was only a small increase in the Labor majority in Kingswood in percentage terms. Cllr Snelling said on Facebook: “To the people of Kingswood I would like to say a huge thank you for your support and trust in the Labor Party.
