Oklahoma’s offensive line was listed as a concern by the opposing coach

Not everyone is convinced Oklahoma is ready for the 2024 campaign. In an anonymous interview with Athlon Sportan opposing SEC assistant coach revealed the areas he believes the Sooners need improvement.

“On defense, they’re starting to get stops on a unit that you would expect Brent (Venables) to coach at Clemson. That’s the good news going into the SEC,” the coach said. “The bad news is they could be bad on the O-line if they can’t get some guys together late in the portal.

“Oklahoma is a legitimate top program, but the SEC’s secret is line play, and they won’t be able to do what they want offensively if they can’t protect against the average DL in this league.”

Oklahoma’s offensive line will have a fresh look in its first year in the SEC. Oklahoma lost the starters Walter Rouse, Andrew Raym, McKade Mettauer and Tyler Guyton in the NFL in the offseason. Further, an offensive tackle begins Cayden Green Transferred to Missouri.

In all, Oklahoma lost 4,188 snaps worth of experience from last year’s O-line unit. Anyway, head coach Brent Venables and Co. they didn’t wallow in self-pity. Instead, the Sooners hit the trade portal, adding five offensive linemen to the roster.

The transfer class is titled Geirean Hatchett. He was an essential piece for WashingtonThe first five to win the 2023 Joe Moore Award, an honor given annually to the best offensive line in college football.

Oklahoma’s front five won’t be the only unit that will see changes for the Sooners next season. After Jeff Lebby let OU take over at Mississippi StateVenables appointed Seth Littrell the Sooners’ next offensive coordinator.

The anonymous SEC assistant coach looked at how Littrell’s offense will differ from Lebby’s.

“If you’re looking for a new offense, it’s not going to be drastically different from (former offensive coordinator Jeff) Lebby, but they have to run the ball more effectively than they did when he was there. Seth (Littrell) is a tailor-made OC guy, a really experienced guy who will make plans to fit in.”
