Suspect arrested for sexually assaulting woman in Wakefield home – NBC New York

An alleged sex predator has been arrested after police say he carried out a terrifying attack in which he broke into his victim’s home in the Bronx and assaulted her as she slept in her bed.

According to police, the suspect entered the 20-year-old woman’s apartment near East 230th Street and White Plains Road in the Wakefield neighborhood by sneaking through a window around 4:30 a.m. on June 29. The victim was asleep in her bed. when she was sexually assaulted.

Then the suspect took off. In the days that followed, police spoke to neighbors and handed out flyers showing the man they were looking for. Surveillance video showed him walking down the street the night of the incident.

On Monday, police arrested Claudio Miranda, 30, in connection with the alleged attack. He was charged with first-degree criminal sexual assault, third-degree burglary and witness tampering. Information from Miranda’s Bronx-based attorney was not immediately clear.

The attack came about a month after another incident less than half a mile away. Police said a man choked a woman and tried to rape her near East 235th Street and Vireo Drive. A suspect, Miguel Rivera, has been identified as a suspect in the incident, which is believed to be unrelated.

Recent NYPD data shows that there have been more rapes and other sex crimes reported on the premises so far in 2024 than there were during the same time in 2023 — an increase of 22 percent and 28 percent, respectively.
