Recap: A61 reopens after crash

A major road in South Yorkshire has been closed following a serious crash.

The A61 Westwood New Road is closed in both directions between the M1 J35 (Barnsley) and the A616 due to a serious collision. The closure is causing long delays for drivers during peak hours.

Emergency services, including South Yorkshire Police, are in attendance.

At the moment, the circumstances of the collision are not known, and it is not clear when the road will be reopened. Yorkshire Live has contacted South Yorkshire Police for further information.

Our travel partner Inrix reports: “The A61 Westwood New Road in both directions has been closed due to an accident from the M1 J36 (Barnsley South / Hoyland) to the A616. Traffic is doing well. Diversion – for bus service 72.”

Road reopened

The A61 is now reopened after an earlier accident.

Our travel partner Inrix reports: “The A61 Westwood New Road in both directions has been reopened, the accident has been cleared from the M1 J36 (Barnsley South / Hoyland) to the A616. Sensors now show that the road has reopened.”

A National Highways spokesman said: “Traffic is being diverted locally at the scene. Delays are likely as the closure and diversion routes approach.

“If this closure impacts your planned route, please allow additional travel time. Plan ahead, you may want to reroute or even delay your trip.”
