“I rejected the Liverpool transfer after the Man United move fell through and my agent screwed up”

Former Netherlands attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder has revealed that he once turned down the chance to join Liverpool, but only after his agent “fooled” a move to Manchester United.

In 2013, before the season in which Brendan Rodgers almost won the Premier League title with Liverpool, Sneijder had the chance to move to England but ended up choosing Galatasaray instead. A few years earlier, when he was in his prime, he could have signed for Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

β€œThe first one was for Man United, that was the thing that my manager cheated a bit β€” my agent at the time,” he told talkSPORT. “And then it was Liverpool and I decided Galatasaray over Liverpool. Just because Liverpool was at that time, not the Liverpool it is today.”

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have Dutch coaches these days. And Sneijder believes Erik ten Hag is more likely to win a Premier League title ahead of Arne Slot.

“Because they have time to build something,” he said. “The coach will stay and I have enough confidence in the coach to build something. So I think they will be stronger this season than last season.

“They are both good coaches. Slot has done an amazing job with Feyenoord and at United, they are very confident with Ten Hag. He has extended his contract, also Ruud Van Nistelrooy, we have just heard that he will be involved.

“So I think they can do a big job because they have great players at United. There has to be a team, they need time. That’s how it looks so far, they are giving time to build a team. I think this season they will go for some prizes .”
