Virginia Tech football: Brent Pry named receives some preseason love

Brent Pry is about to begin his third season as head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies. Through two seasons, Pry has a 10-14 record. However, there is optimism that Pry and the Hokies could be in store for a big 2024 season.

Virginia Tech returns 20 starters from a team that won five of its final seven games last season, including a Military Bowl victory over Tulane. Among those back are quarterback Kyron Drones. The Hokies retained several of their top players and, for the second consecutive season, added potential key starters through the NCAA transfer portal.

With VT expected to have a good season in 2024, Pry received some preseason love on Monday when he was one of 21 coaches named to the watch list for the 2024 Dodd Trophy.

The Dodd Trophy is given annually to one FBS coach “whose team excels on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.” The winner is revealed during halftime of the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.

Legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer won the award in 1999.

Dodd is the longtime former Georgia Tech head coach who retired in 1966 and died in 1988.
