Anyone with an Android phone has been told to prepare for major changes

Anyone with an Android phone has been told to get ready for a big change coming into effect next month. The move could cause some users to lose access to a popular service.

Google Wallet will disappear for anyone with an Android with a software version lower than Android 9 from June 10. The software level was released in 2018, so the vast majority of people should be unaffected.

However, if your phone is running on an earlier version, then you will need to update the software if you want to continue using Google Wallet. To check which version of Android your phone is running, go to settings and then about phone at the bottom of the page.

Click on the Android version and it should reveal your information. A Google spokesperson said: “To keep Wallet features more secure, like tap-to-pay transactions, we need to be able to push security updates to your device.

“Security updates are not available for Android versions below 9.” If a user has an old phone that is not eligible for the upgrade, they will need to get a new one if they want to continue using Google Wallet.

Older Wear OS smartwatches will also be affected by the change, with customers needing Wear OS 2.x or later to continue using Google Wallet.
