Leeds United sold Charlie Cresswell to Toulouse on a permanent deal on Monday, ending the young centre-back’s spell at the club.

Just 11 months ago, Charlie Cresswell penned a new contract extension at Elland Road following a strong loan spell at Millwall.

However, the 23/24 fixture was much tougher for Cresswell than expected, struggling for game time and now finding himself in France on a permanent deal.

Charlie Cresswell completes £3.8m move to Toulouse

Confirmation came on Monday afternoon that Cresswell had completed a move away from Leeds, joining Ligue 1 side Toulouse on a permanent deal.

The length of his contract at his new club has not been disclosed, but the fee in question is around £3.8m.

It follows a battle for playing time for Cresswell, behind Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Ethan Ampadu and Liam Cooper in the pecking order last season.

His frustrations came to a head when he apparently took exception to Daniel Farke, as well as his father doing the same on social media, seeing him banned for a period in early 2024.

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Charlie Cresswell tells us why he left Leeds this week

Speaking to his new club after signing a permanent deal, Cresswell told why he was so happy to move to Toulouse, albeit after initially turning his back on a deal.

He said, via their official website:

“I felt wanted by the Club, who pushed hard internally to sign me. They made me understand that I can be an important part of the project. An ambitious project, that’s what I liked about it.”

Regarding his time at Leeds and why he wanted to part ways, he continued:

“This club represents a lot. It’s a family story with Leeds, my dad was playing at the time. I debuted there, climbed all the ranks and have all my friends. But it was time to go, especially after this last season when I wished I had more playing time. I am now focusing on Toulouse.”

Cresswell had to go and this is a good deal for all parties

It’s justifiable for fans to be upset at losing Cresswell after already seeing Archie Gray leave, but there’s a reason why other options were favored over him at Leeds.

He had no chance of replacing Rodon, Struijk or Ampadu last season and getting £3.8m for someone who is fourth choice at best is good business.

Cresswell could come in handy and prove the club wrong in that regard, but he still has a lot of room to improve for that to happen.

Also, the way he handled his lack of playing time was strange last season and doesn’t fit at all.
