Reports: Warrington Wolves closing in on signing from Super League rivals

Warrington Wolves are flying high in 2024 but recruitment plans are already in place for 2025, with Sam Burgess and his team identifying their number one target.

A number of transfers have been confirmed for 2025 since the May 1 deadline, after which clubs can officially begin negotiations with out-of-contract players from other clubs.

The most notable and shocking of which saw Hull FC confirm the arrival of Leigh Leopards captain John Asiata on a three-year deal. Meanwhile, some expected arrivals have also been confirmed, such as Mike McMeeken making a move to Wakefield Trinity for 2025 on a whopping four-year deal.

One club who have yet to make a move is Warrington and Wolves are completely off the radar in their recruitment. However, that has changed as talks to sign the Super League star have intensified with negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage.

The man Warrington Wolves have been linked with is Huddersfield Giants captain Luke Yates, the Australian’s contract at the John Smiths Stadium is set to run out at the end of the year.

Yates has been one of the Giants’ most consistent performers during his three-and-a-half-year stay at the club, having arrived from Salford ahead of the 2021 season. Yates was so impressive that he was appointed captain after just one year and has led the club for the past two and a half seasons.

Heading into the 2024 season, there were more than 100 players whose deals were due to expire at the end of the campaign, with Yates among a number of high-profile stars set to see their deals end at Huddersfield.

Center backs Kevin Naiqama and Esan Marsters are both on the shortlist, but it appears Yates is most likely to leave with Warrington Wolves leading the way to land the Australian forward.

Warrington Wolves’ pursuit of Yates has brought the club to an “advanced stage”, according to the Warrington Guardian, who reported on the news, going on to claim that Yates could be the only man the Wire recruit for 2025.

This is a credit to the strength of their squad and the planning that saw young talent such as Leon Hayes emerge before his untimely injury.

The Guardian went further and claimed that “the deal is close to completion”, which would be a huge coup for Warrington and a hammer blow for Huddersfield.

Signing Yates would bring immense leadership and an elite approach, with Yates being named Hitman of the Year in 2023 while leading the tackle charts with over 1,000. So far in 2024, Yates has made 320 tackles in just eight games and his absence has been conspicuous as Huddersfield have lost two of the three games their skipper has not played following a controversial pre-season ban.
