Liverpool fans make the same point Ibrahima Konate after France exited Euro 2024

Fans are left scratching their heads over Ibrahima Konate’s lack of game time against Spain in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

In France’s 2-1 defeat to Spain, the Liverpool star was relegated to the bench as Didier Deschamps watched as their hopes of winning the tournament were dashed at the hands of prodigies Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo. Randal Kolo Muani scored the first goal of the game, but that would be all the French could muster against the Spanish side.

And even when Deschamps needed more defence, the 55-year-old opted against bringing in Konate to bolster the defence. Naturally, fans were confused as to why the 25-year-old was left to languish on the bench as his country was knocked out of the tournament.

“Ibrahima Konate is the only thing you don’t choose to play and it’s so wrong he has to sit on the bench not playing,” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter. Another shared a similar sentiment, writing: “France’s biggest mistake was not starting Ibrahima Konate.”

Other fans wrote in, claiming that Konate in defense helped France reach the 2022 World Cup finals, while his replacement, William Saliba, was unable to help the team reach the Euro finals.

Another fan wrote: “Condolences for Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate who hasn’t conceded a goal in this tournament but has been sadly let down by his teammates.”

It is interesting to note that Konate did not play in any of France’s games in this tournament. Against Austria, Holland, Poland, Belgium, Portugal and Spain, Konate did not leave the bench once.

Despite not playing, Konate made sure to show his support for Saliba as those on social media began to take notice of his play. “My brother doesn’t do that anymore,” Konate wrote to a Liverpool fan on X, which showed Saliba’s shortcomings on the pitch.
