Expert Shares ‘Little Known’ Hangover Remedy You Should Try Before A Big Night Out | Bristol Live

Many people grit their teeth and endure unpleasant hangover symptoms after a night out on the town. However, health experts have highlighted the benefits of a ‘little known’ drink that could relieve hangover symptoms.

For those getting ready for a night on the town but not keen on dealing with a dreaded hangover the next morning, this might be a solution worth trying. It just takes a little preparation beforehand.

Alcohol acts as a diuretic, leading to increased fluid loss from the body. This effect causes frequent trips to the bathroom as it flushes your kidneys.

Dr. Holly Fennell, medical expert, insists on a “hard rule” for her patients, which involves drinking a certain type of drink before starting to drink alcohol. She advises, “It’s not a strategy if you drink alcohol to drink water later.

“If you’re going to have even one drink, take an electrolyte at least 20 to 30 minutes before. If you wait until you’ve already had a drink and then start rehydrating, it’s not as effective and your body has to work harder and is left in a more physiological state of stress,” the Express reports.

Catherine Gervacio, RD, a dietitian and nutrition writer for Living.Fit, added, “While they won’t prevent a hangover, electrolytes may reduce one’s symptoms.” She explained that because electrolytes help rebalance body fluids after drinking alcohol, you may find hangover symptoms less severe.

While sports drinks are often preferred for electrolytes, coconut water and certain juices also provide these essential minerals. You can improve the electrolyte content of most drinks by adding electrolyte powders.

Fruits such as bananas, oranges and watermelons, green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, and dairy products including milk and yogurt are all dietary sources of electrolytes. Supplements are also available in capsule or tablet form.
