Body language expert thinks real ‘Martha’ from Baby Reindeer is lying in Piers Morgan interview

A body language expert has highlighted a number of ‘inconsistencies’ that the supposedly ‘real’ Martha from Netflix’s Baby Reindeer displayed during her interview with Piers Morgan. Fiona Harvey identified herself as the inspiration for Richard Gadd’s character after a number of people searched for the real woman.

In the interview with Morgan, the woman was pressed about her relationship with the comedian (she claimed she only met him five or six times), the number of emails he sent her (Baby Reindeer claims around 41,000), as well and her plans. to file a lawsuit against Netflix. However, Jesús Enrique Rosas, also known as The Body Language Guy, has reviewed the interview himself and claims that her testimony is full of “inconsistencies” – and that Harvey “butchered” her own statement several times during the chat of the Rosas explained the first hint of body language – blinking.

When she explained how many times Harvey met Gadd, she said “only two or three times,” followed by a quick blink. Rosas said, “Blinking is one of the easiest ways to detect an emotional response.”

He continued: “In this case, you see some fluttering or quick blinking right after she says, ‘I’ve only met this guy two or three times, I don’t know him.’ That rapid blinking could be nervousness, but at the same time, it could be part of her basic expression or body language.”

In another clip, Harvey is seen closing her eyelids faster, which Rosas claimed indicates that it’s not a response she does all the time. The expert said: “But then Piers asked a direct question: ‘So you’re 100 per cent sure it’s not you?’ (the woman featured on the show. Look at her mouth.”

Rosas continued, “She doesn’t have the quick blink this time, but she purses her lips immediately after saying that ‘yeah, she’s sure she’s not the woman depicted on the show.’ Lip pursing is another emotional marker that can signal frustration, being angry, nervous, or other moderate to strong emotions. By now, it could be normal nervousness due to the circumstances.”

The expert explained that there were some instances where Harvey was telling the truth, pointing to when Morgan asked her about her baby reindeer toy – the inspiration for the show’s name. She told the presenter: “I had a toy reindeer. And I shaved his head, it’s true, and there were reindeer in the shops. It was Christmas or something. It was a joke.”

Rosas described this as a “soft gotcha moment”. He said: “The name of the show, Baby Reindeer, is named after a stuffed toy, a baby reindeer that the stalking lady had when she was a girl. And Fiona accepts it… What a coincidence! She also had a reindeer as a girl. And when she answers that question, there’s no quick blinking or lip pressing or anything.”

The expert explained that Harvey made two statements in the first five minutes of the interview that he met the comedian “two or three times”. Fiona, referring to the number of times she tweeted to Gadd, said: “It wasn’t numerous, it was about 18 tweets on there or 14. But we were all friends, you know it was a joke.” .

Rosas explained: “‘We were all friends’ is a way of covering up the fact that yes, he did mention Richard on Twitter a few times… but it’s not a big deal, because ‘we were all friends.’ Who “all of us” is, no one knows, but she speaks in terms of “all of us”, so it doesn’t seem like the interaction was between her and Richard, and no one else.

“Though, in said tweets, Richard was the only one tagged. I have to say that Piers was quite clever and allowed enough time to pass before asking the question again. So 30 minutes later, he asks another direct question: Was Richard Gadd her boyfriend?

Harvey denied that Gadd was ever her boyfriend. Rosas continued, “Piers asked again…how many times have you met with Richard Gadd?”

This time the woman answered five or six times. “Yes. Near the beginning of the interview, she said not once, but twice that she had met… two or three times with Richard Gadd. Now, near the end, she raised that number to five or six .”

When asked by Morgan if he had watched Baby Reindeer, Harvey explained that he had not, but had heard about bits and pieces of the show, before referencing details from each of the episodes several times. In the interview, Harvey claims that Baby Reindeer is a “work of fiction” and a “work of hyperbole”.

She said: “I have always said and there are two true facts that his name is Richard Gadd and he worked as a hired barman.”

Rosas claimed the woman’s eyes were “shooting all over the place,” saying, “This could happen if the person is trying to recreate a complex situation in their mind. That’s why we have to refer to what she said. Was it…too complicated? She was just saying that the show is a work of fiction, a hyperbole. How hard is it… to say that, if it’s the truth? It’s very simple.

“It wouldn’t require a lot of brain power or create images in your mind. In fact, those words, “it’s a work of fiction” is your main argument. So the fact that she displays emotional markers when making such a basic statement is another red flag. This is the kind of moment you should remember to repeat the question or add a similar question later in the conversation.”

Harvey later claims that he never called Richard Gadd a liar, but that only the Netflix series wasn’t true. She also denies texting or messaging the comedian on Facebook.

Another indicator that the expert claims is the time in which he answered the questions asked. He said, “There is nothing natural about what you are about to witness. It’s a body language dissonance so obvious it almost jumps off the screen. Make sure you pay attention to her head movement.”

Rosas continued, “It’s one thing to say, ‘I think so,’ and you’re nodding your head, because you’re stating something, so it makes sense for your head to go up and down, like yes. But then… she says that one of the scenes in the show ‘definitely didn’t happen’… and nods her head again, as if in affirmation. She denies it with her words… but nods her head. Not a good look. Another red flag.”

Harvey also wondered why he would need to take a lie detector test when Morgan asked if he would take one.
