Planning Cornwall: Holiday park expansion among latest proposals

Plans to add more than 40 new cottages to a holiday park, a scheme to help farmers diversify and the upgrade of a cottage hospital are among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council.

Each week over 100 applications are validated by Cornwall Council and we have selected some of the most exciting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council must be validated and are available for public inspection. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments on the applications – either in support or objection.

Most applications are decided by council planning officers under delegated powers. However, some applications will be referred to elected councilors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for the determination of the planning applications below. These can be viewed by accessing the planning portal on Cornwall Council’s website.

Over 40 new cabins in the holiday park

Atlantic Bays Holiday Park in St Merryn, near Padstow, has applied for 44 holiday cottages with internal roads and parking on its site, near the former Second World War base at St Merryn Airfield.

The existing Atlantic Bays Holiday Park, a five-flag AA Gold Award site, offers a range of tourist accommodation all year round, including luxury lodges, lodges, tour sites and serviced and unserviced camping sites.

The planning application states: “Since Covid, there has been a significant change in holiday destination trends, with UK holidays now a much more popular choice for holidaymakers. This has led to an increase in demand for holiday park holiday units. .

“The proposed scheme has been designed as a sustainable extension of the existing holiday park, which already hosts a wide range of tourist accommodation types, but would meet the increasing demand and expectation of visitors for good quality accommodation in a attractive setting, sympathetic to natural nature. environment.”

Farmers are diversifying to become the hub of self-storage containers

George Richards Farms has put 18 containers on site, with two more still in use, on land at Higher Trefullock Farm, Summercourt, to diversify into a self-storage business.

The application states that “the progressive family business includes well-established traditional cattle, sheep and arable businesses. For reasons of continued viability and succession planning, the family is now looking to further diversify the holding”.

Each existing container and each proposed container will be 20 ft long x 8 ft wide x 8.6 ft high with a dark green finish. Containers on site will be for self-storage purposes only. The site will be operated commercially, with containers leased to customers on a month-to-month basis.

The Richards family will manage the business themselves and will be responsible for collecting monthly rents, promoting and maintaining the site.

The application adds: “The self-storage container site in this accessible location is anticipated to attract a wide range of people. Basically, the site will appeal to those who don’t have enough storage space at home or those who don’t have enough storage space for their business. related items For example, the site will appeal to those who may live in rented accommodation who also require private storage space for larger items such as bikes, kayaks, surfboards etc.

“The site will also appeal to those who are in the process of moving and need temporary storage space for their furniture. The site will also appeal to business owners who need additional storage space for tools and equipment. For example, a carpenter may need dry storage space for lumber.”

The recently established self-storage container site at Trenithon Farm, Summercourt, is cited as demonstrating a clear demand for such a facility in the area.

The new building will help modernize the Victorian Community Hospital

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has applied for a temporary healthcare building to help modernize and upgrade the Victorian block of Camborne and Redruth Community Hospital (CRCH) in Barncoose, Redruth.

A planning application states that the majority of the estate portfolio is among the oldest NHS estates in the country. The Victorian part of the community hospital is in need of significant refurbishment. A structural report identified that building components suffered significant damage and deterioration from moisture and mold. It is likely that much of the structural wood will have to be replaced.

The upgrade works will provide the fire remedial work required to bring Hyman Ward back into service, meeting updated fire safety requirements. To enable this much needed work, a modular ward is needed on the CRCH campus.

The new temporary building is designed using off-site modular construction to shorten construction time and minimize site disruption. The building will arrive on site as separate modules that will be fitted into position. It will link to the existing building and provide a direct route from the ambulance drop-off point.

Masonic lodge demolition and replacement

Plans have been submitted to demolish Bude’s Masonic Lodge, which is over 100 years old, and build a replacement with flats on top. The building, which is adjacent to the Neetside Center (formally the Drill Hall and Old Chapel), fronts the River Neet.

The application states that the lodge has reached the end of its economic and functional life. “The cost of maintenance and heating due to the insulation being far below current standards is now excessive. As the Freemasonry, which is one of Britain’s leading charities, has become more open, the facilities are no longer adequate.

“Granville Lodge has decided to apply for permission for the redevelopment and the three first floor apartments will enable the financial commitment of the project. The new catering facilities will be available for public use.”

There is a documented shortage of apartments in Bude and the proposed accommodation would help reduce the demand for this type of accommodation. The apartments would be for long term rental and not holiday accommodation.

Turning the cemetery chapel into a show center

Trevow Helston is seeking pre-application advice to turn the Old Cemetery Chapel in Meneage Road, Helston, into a performance centre. The work would include replacing doors and windows, adding toilets and solar panels and replacing interior flooring.
