More rain forecast in Greater Manchester after Met Office thunderstorm warning

More rain is forecast for Greater Manchester today after a thunderstorm warning was issued by the Met Office.

The Met Office issued the yellow weather warning yesterday (Tuesday) as thundery conditions and heavy rain were set to sweep across the UK. The warning, which covered all of Greater Manchester, was originally due to last from 2pm until the end of the day, but forecasters extended it until 2am this morning.

Forecasters have predicted that heavy downpours will lead to flooding in some areas, with 10-20mm of rainfall in an hour expected in some areas. Some places were set to potentially see 30mm of rain in just a few hours, the Met Office added.

More showers are set to fall across Greater Manchester today (Wednesday) – although forecasters predict they will be lighter than yesterday. After a gloomy and overcast start to the morning, light rain showers are expected around 10am and are set to last most of the day.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of around 17 degrees Celsius today. More light rain showers are forecast throughout Thursday as a similar weather picture is expected.

Conditions aren’t set to brighten until Sunday afternoon after a largely cloudy weekend. Temperatures then look set to warm slightly from Monday as the mercury rises to a maximum of 21C.

On the general forecast for the North West for today, the Met Office said: “Generally cloudy and at times wet with patchy drizzle or drizzle and perhaps the odd brighter interlude.

“Feeling chilly for July. Max temp 17C.”

Regarding the forecast for the weekend, forecasters said: “A good deal of dry weather, although quite a bit cloudy at this time. Isolated showers on Saturday.

“Temperatures generally below average, but feel warm when the sun comes out.”
