Liverpool recently had the chance to sign an ‘incredible’ Euro 2024 striker for £85m

Liverpool have yet to make their first concrete move of the summer transfer window.

The Reds could add a few extra touches to the side that fell short in the Premier League last season.

However, with Arne Slot having just arrived and some major changes taking place in Liverpool’s recruitment team, nothing came of it.

But that doesn’t mean talks aren’t ongoing at Anfield. The Reds are quiet and often intelligent workers in the transfer market and this is unlikely to change anytime soon.

While there are certainly options that could improve Liverpool’s squad, that doesn’t mean Slot, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards will go for each.

Liverpool turned down Anthony Gordon for £85m

One area that Liverpool could do with upgrading is their attack. The slot has some top options, but the Reds were wasteful in front of goal last year.

As a result, Liverpool have been linked with bringing in another attacking player.

Some of these potential signings have made headlines at Euro 2024 this summer. Nico Williams has been heavily linked with Liverpool after impressing for finalists Spain.

Other strikers from the tournament are also reportedly on the Reds’ shortlist. Baris Alper Yilmaz claims to be on Liverpool’s radar after impressing with Turkey.

Ultimately, the strongest connections of all have to come to a player who only played a handful of minutes in Germany: Anthony Gordon. Gordon was close to joining Liverpool after being in talks over a move away from Newcastle.

With Newcastle in danger of breaching PSR rules at the end of June, Give Me Sport have now confirmed that Gordon has been offered to Liverpool and not the other way around.

“Sources close to Liverpool” reportedly insisted they were offered the chance to sign the 23-year-old for £85m last month, despite Newcastle sources adamant that was not the case.

While the Reds are said to have noted that the offer was cheaper than the £100m they expected Gordon to cost, it was still too much to consider.

Liverpool are said to remain “admirers” of the England international, who is reportedly “keen” on the move. However, it is assumed that nothing will progress from Liverpool’s end until the asking price drops “significantly”.

Liverpool should wait for Anthony Gordon’s move

Fans were excited at the prospect of Liverpool fan Gordon returning to the club he left when he was very young.

However, you can understand why the Reds chose not to move forward with a deal.

Given his form for Newcastle, his age, potential and status as an England international, £85m is undoubtedly a fair price for the Magpies. After all, Eddie Howe called Gordon “unbelievable”.

But from Liverpool’s perspective, they are well stocked on the left. He might want another player there, but not for a record fee.

It makes sense to expect that for Liverpool as well. Gordon has just two years left on his contract on Tyneside. Wait a year and not only will the Reds be more likely to need a left winger, the Scouser will certainly be a lot cheaper.

The price may still be high, but Liverpool clearly have something in mind with Gordon.
