Martin Lewis says British Gas, EDF, OVO and EON customers can get £180 today

Money saving expert Martin Lewis has revealed that customers of major energy firms including British Gas, EDF, OVO, Octopus Energy, E. On and Scottish Power could get up to £180 straight into their bank accounts right now . Lewis suggests May is the annual time all energy customers should review their bills and the credit balance on their accounts.

This is because those who overpay their monthly direct debit can easily spot the problem in May, a time when, in theory, your account should be at its most in debt before the summer months push you back into credit . The average repayment for money owed is £180. Customers simply need to contact their energy company to have the payment returned directly to their bank account.

Lewis pointed out that energy companies currently hold around £3 billion of our money, which equates to an average of £180 per household, the Express reports.

Due to the nature of monthly energy direct debits, the amount paid each month is an average of your usage over the year. In the winter, you’ll pay less than you use, building up debt, but in the summer, you’ll pay more than you use, reducing debt and building credit.

Since May is the “bottom” of the cycle, you shouldn’t have much credit now because winter has just ended and summer usage is just starting. Martin advises: “So if you’ve had an up-to-date meter reading (or your smart meter has), your bill is up to date and your direct debit is at the right level, now is the perfect time to see if you have too much energy credit The value of more than a month now is definitely a lot, so ask for it back.
