SD&G – A rainfall warning is in effect for Cornwall, SD&G and much of Eastern Ontario as remnants of Hurricane Beryl move into the region Wednesday.

Environment Canada says torrential downpours are expected with 40-80 millimeters (1.6-3.1 inches) of rain falling at rates of 20-40 millimeters (0.8-1.6 inches) per hour.

The rain is expected to continue from this morning (Wednesday) until Thursday morning.

Beryl made landfall in Texas on Monday as a Category 1 but has since petered out to a post-tropical cyclone. At least nine people in Texas died in the storm and it caused numerous power outages.

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority and the South Nation Conservation Authority have both issued flood watches.

The RRCA says – specifically in North Glengarry – areas that would flood downstream of the Mill Pond in Alexandria are at high risk.

It says water levels are being monitored on Loch Garry, Middle Lake and the Mill Pond and dam outflows may need to be adjusted causing “sudden increases” in water flow.
