Nick Rushton is stepping down as leader of Leicestershire County Council after being diagnosed with cancer

Nick Rushton has today announced that he will stand down as leader of Leicestershire County Council. Speaking at this afternoon’s full council meeting, he informed members that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

The Tory member, who has led the council since 2012, said he would soon undergo treatment and would “have to take a back seat in the short term”. Deputy leader Deborah Taylor will step into the void as interim leader in his absence.

Coun Rushton said he was “very grateful” to Coun Taylor for “taking responsibility”. Robert Ashman will also move from a supporting member to take on economic development responsibilities as cabinet leader.

Acting leader Deborah Taylor offered her best wishes for Rushton council’s recovery and said she was sure everyone would “work together to ensure the council continues on the right track over the next few months”.

Coun Rushton’s son Bertie Harrison-Rushton is also an elected member. Speaking in the hall after his father’s announcement, he said: “Whenever cancer comes into someone’s life it’s incredibly overwhelming and complicated, but I saw dad not only at work but behind the scenes and it was absolutely persistent and incredible the way it is. he answered.

“A lot of people have said to me ‘he’ll get over it because he’s so unhappy’ and there’s probably an element of truth there.”

He added: “I think the way he came to us today and was so open and honest is just a testament to his character and shows that we can all be open about these types of health issues. So father, leader, good luck.”
