Johanita Dogbey: Man faces life sentence for Brixton attacks

A man faces life in prison for a series of slasher attacks on strangers which culminated in the random killing of a woman in south London.

Mohamed Nur, 34, was armed with a makeshift blade when he slashed Johanita Kossiwa Dogbey’s throat in broad daylight on May 1, 2023.

Ms Dogbey, 31, was walking along Stockwell Park Walk in Brixton after going into central London to do some shopping.

She was attacked from behind and died on the spot.

A post-mortem examination identified the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the neck.

It can now be reported that Nur has previously admitted to murdering Mrs Dogbey.

Nur admitted he had a blade made from scissors on the day he killed Ms Dogbey, as well as another weapon made from broken glass the day after he was arrested.

The trial at the Old Bailey centered on three other attacks two days before Ms Dogbey’s death, in which all the victims suffered facial cuts.

Criminal lawyer Julian Evans KC told jurors that in each case the victim “did nothing to confront or provoke” Nur and each was attacked “without warning and for no apparent reason”.

Nur, who refused to attend the trial, was found guilty of three counts of unlawful wounding.

He is in custody and will be sentenced on Thursday, May 23.

Judge Angela Rafferty KC said Nur must attend the hearing in person or he could be sentenced in his absence.

The judge said she was “not writing any more letters” to the defendant because the trial was now over.

It was important for him to attend, the judge said, and his absences gave rise to a series of contempt offences.

These should be resolved at sentencing, she added.
