Birmingham’s Poet Laureate appoints Poet Fellows for community reading initiative

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham City Poet Laureate Salaam Green has nominated two women to serve as Community Poet Laureates.

Karima Moore will serve as the inaugural Youth Poet Scholar and Maati Sanovia will serve as the inaugural Adult Poet Scholar.

The two will work with two branches of the Birmingham Public Library to facilitate poetry programming to support summer reading and literacy initiatives. Each fellow will receive a $500 honorarium that Create Birmingham will administer.

According to a news release, Moor will partner with BPL’s Summer STEAMER Camp, offering elementary students an interdisciplinary curriculum to reverse summer learning loss. The camp will be held at BPL Central Branch.

The Poet Fellowship initiative is a partnership between Green, Birmingham Public Libraries and Create Birmingham.
