A Birmingham man has been jailed for 7 years for illegal gun possession

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for illegal gun possession, according to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

Peter Gupton, 41, was sentenced to 84 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.


The plea agreement stated that Birmingham police officers went to the scene of a reported shooting in Woodlawn on February 23, 2023. Gupton fled the scene on foot, but officers found him behind a dumpster and detained him.

Gupton then led officers to a loaded handgun he had hidden behind a bush at Christ Health Center. The gun was reported stolen and officers also found a shell casing near the area of ​​the shooting.

The ATF investigated the case along with the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant US Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer prosecuted the case.
