There’s no big screen in central Coventry for the Euro final – but pubs can stay open late

England could bring football home this Sunday – but there are no plans to show the Euro final on a big screen in Coventry city centre. The local council have confirmed they will not be holding an event to broadcast the match for safety reasons.

Organizing an event at short notice would be “challenging” and demand too high, a spokesman said. They said the authority supported city venues and said match venues could be found online.

Pubs in the city will be able to stay open for another two hours on Sunday night, until 1am. Venues ‘licensed’ to sell drink until 11pm can do so on Sunday 14 July.

This is subject to a change to national licensing rules for the final matches of the tournament and only applies if England or Scotland are playing. The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) asked the council if it planned to show the Euro final on a big screen following England’s semi-final victory yesterday, July 10.

A spokesman said: “There are no plans to show Sunday’s Euro 2024 final in the city centre. We support Coventry’s hospitality venues and encourage football fans to enjoy matches at venues across the city that support the games.

“These locations can be found on the Visit Coventry website. Organizing any event at relatively short notice would always be a challenge for logistical and licensing reasons, but the overwhelming challenge would be safety.
