Wigan Athletic launch bid for League One striker

Wigan Athletic have submitted a bid to sign striker Kyle Joseph from League One rivals Blackpool ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The 22-year-old is a graduate of the Wigan Athletics Academy but could be set to return to his former club on a permanent deal after falling out of favor towards the end of the previous campaign.

Joseph has reportedly been the subject of two bids this summer, with Wigan Athletic believed to be one of those sides.

How did Joseph do last season?

Having joined on a permanent deal last summer as part of Jerry Yates’ move from Blackpool to Swansea, Joseph has made a total of 37 appearances in all competitions.

During that time, Joseph scored twice and provided a further eight assists for Neil Critchley’s side as they narrowly missed out on a League One play-off place.

This included both assists during a 2-1 win against Bristol Rovers in January.

He also played as a forward and left winger throughout the previous campaign, likely adding depth and versatility to whichever side lures him this summer.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Wigan Athletic are one of two clubs who have submitted a bid for the Blackpool forward, although the figure has not been disclosed.

Would a move to Wigan benefit Joseph’s development?

Last season saw Joseph contribute eight goals in 30 league appearances for Blackpool despite being reduced to a substitute role in the closing weeks of the League One season.

However, getting the opportunity to become the main man for a rival Ligue 1 team could allow Joseph to build on his previous campaign and potentially hit double figures.

Wigan Athletic had a difficult 2023/24 campaign but managed to finish strongly and will likely be looking to step up next season and challenge for the League One play-off places.
