Live: The A38 has been closed after a lorry crashed into the railway bridge

The A38 is closed in both directions after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge near Trerulefoot. The road is closed on the A38 Mill Road.

Google Maps reports heavy congestion in the area as a result. We’ll keep you updated with the latest in our live blog below.




Traffic is very slow approaching the Trerulefoot roundabout for several miles on the A38. The A374 approach to the roundabout is also congested as drivers find their route blocked.

Traffic and travel monitoring service Inrix reports: “A38 Mill Road both ways partially blocked, slow traffic due to rail bridge hit by vehicle from A374 (Trerulefoot Roundabout, Trerulefoot) to Church Road (Tideford).

Major agglomeration to the east

Inrix reports that most of the congestion is from the east, from Liskeard.

The road will reopen around 11am

National Highways estimates that the A38 at Trerulefoot will return to normal at around 11am.

Detours in place after the truck crashed into the bridge

Devieri national highways are in place after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge.

Road users traveling east are advised to follow the solid square detour symbol on road signs:

  • At Liskeard, exit the A38 onto the A390 northbound
  • Follow the A390 east to Callington
  • At the A388 roundabout at Callington, take the third exit onto the A388.
  • Follow the A388 south to the Carkeel roundabout and take the first exit to join the A38 east.

Road users traveling west are advised to follow the solid square detour symbol on road signs:

  • At the Carkeel roundabout take the 3rd exit for the A388 northbound towards Callington
  • Stay on the A388 north to the A390 roundabout at Callington
  • Take the first exit onto the A390 west towards Liskeard
  • Stay on the A390 westbound to join the A38 westbound at Liskeard

Those traveling from further afield are advised to use the A38 instead.
