Three people rescued as another jumps from window to escape burning building – South London News

Six people managed to escape from a three-storey building after a ground-floor flat caught fire in the early hours of this morning.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Aldrington Road, Streatham Park.

A ground floor flat in a three-storey semi-detached property was completely destroyed in the fire, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Firefighters used a 13.5 meter ladder to rescue three people trapped on the second floor. All three were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.

Two other people, who escaped the building before LFB arrived, were also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

A sixth resident managed to escape the building by jumping from a first floor window. They were taken to hospital by paramedics due to ankle injuries sustained during the escape.

The brigade was first called to the fire at around 1.40am and firefighters brought the incident under control at around 3am.

Crews from Tooting, West Norwood, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the LFB and the Met Police.

Speaking after the fire, Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “This was a complex incident involving a property which had been converted into a number of separate flats over three floors.

“Firefighters worked hard to control the incident and in the process rescued three people who were trapped in a second floor apartment by the fire.

“The professionalism and dedication shown by the crews last night highlights the work that all our firefighters and officers do to serve and protect London.

“I would also like to thank our emergency service partners from London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police Service for their support at the scene while we responded.

“The LFB’s specialist fire investigators will now support our police colleagues as we work to determine the cause of the fire.”
