Manchester United’s problems have lasted ‘too long’ – David Beckham

David Beckham believes Manchester United’s problems have lasted “too long” since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.

United have not won the Premier League title since Ferguson’s final season in charge, and the club’s most recent Champions League triumph came in 2008.

The club’s only trophy in 2017 was last year’s League Cup trophy, and this season United are at risk of finishing seventh in the Premier League – which would be their lowest trophy haul since 1990.

Speaking exclusively to The Athleticmanchester united podcast, Talk about devilsBeckham – a lifelong United fan who scored 85 goals in 394 appearances for the club, winning 12 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 1999 – spoke of the difficulties of the last decade.

“I think it’s been a difficult time over the last five or 10 years, but it always will be when the boss leaves the club,” Beckham said.

“It wasn’t just that, we lost players like Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Gary Neville, all these players who have been at United for so long; you lose some of that and you lose some of the club.

“So it’s always going to be a difficult time. But we’d like it to change pretty quickly because I think it’s been going on for too long now.”

Beckham was speaking at the premiere of 99, the Amazon Prime documentary covering United’s iconic title-winning season 25 years ago.
