Fatal shooting of Birmingham firefighter unsolved 1 year later

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Friday marks one year since the shooting of Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton at Station 9 in Norwood.

Melton died from injuries sustained in the July 17 shooting. A year later, no one has been charged in connection with the shooting.

Firefighter Jamal Jones was critically injured during the shooting but survived.

In February, Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police had identified several persons of interest in the shooting, but “didn’t feel comfortable calling any of them suspects yet.”

Rewards for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Melton’s death total $46,000. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Birmingham police will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Friday morning to discuss the case.
