Leeds United’s loan deal for Joe Rothwell includes a permanent option

Leeds United have signed Joe Rothwell on a season-long loan and according to Adam Pope, the deal includes an option to buy.

Leeds United secured the signing of midfielder Rothwell on Thursday night, bringing him on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

It wasn’t long between the rumors first appearing and the signing being announced. The 29-year-old is a welcome addition to Daniel Farke’s midfield, bringing bags of energy and Championship pedigree to Elland Road.

The Whites’ announcement states that Rothwell is on loan for the season, with no mention of an option to buy.

However, according to BBC Sport reporter Adam Pope, Leeds United will be able to bring Rothwell in permanently if they wish when his loan is up.

There is indeed an option to buy the Bournemouth man next summer, says Pope.

Rothwell’s deal with the Cherries expires in the summer of 2026.

A long-term addition

While Rothwell is only on loan for now, the option to make his temporary switch permanent this time next year means he could be around Elland Road for some time to come.

The former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers man will need to impress with Leeds United. Many will support him to do that as well.

He is a progressive, forward-thinking midfielder who carries the ball well from deep. Rothwell is confident of taking on his man, allowing him to operate as an attacking midfielder as well as in his usual deeper role.

It will be intriguing to see if he can earn a place in Farke’s starting XI, with competition for a place sure to be strong again.

Current middle options

The middle of the park is somewhere, Leeds United need recruits this summer. Archie Gray – although used mainly at right-back by Farke – has been sold to Spurs and rumors also surround the future of Glen Kamara.

Ilia Gruev was also mentioned as a target for Borussia Dortmund, but even before there were any more exits, signatures were needed.

Further departures would mean more fresh faces would be needed alongside Rothwell. For now, though, Rothwell will have Kamara, Gruev and Ethan Ampadu to contend with for a starting spot.

Between the four, Farke seems to have a strong midfield. More depth wouldn’t go amiss though, so expect Leeds United to shift their focus to another addition at some point this summer.
