Women’s Super League: Wigan Warriors 12-16 St Helens – visitors go up

St Helens overcame Wigan to go top of the Women’s Super League as they held off a second-half Warriors comeback at the Brick Community Stadium.

Saints claimed a seventh straight win in all competitions to complete a derby double over their nearest rivals.

Early pressure from the visitors was rewarded with a try from Rachael Woosey after just eight minutes when she dived in the corner.

Faye Gaskin converted but hit the bar with her second effort 15 minutes later after Woosey had put Saints 10-0 up with a virtual replica of her first try.

Ellise Derbyshire crossed to give Wigan hope after the break and Isabel Rowe’s conversion reduced the deficit to four points.

However, Vicky Whitfield snuffed out the hosts’ hopes of a comeback by heading over 10 minutes from time, before Eva Hunter grabbed a late Wigan consolation.
