Coventry have no plans for Euros final on big screen | News

The council has said it won’t hold one for “safety reasons”.

England could bring football home this Sunday – but there are no plans to show the Euros final on a big screen in Coventry city centre. The city council confirmed it would not be putting on an event to broadcast the match due to safety concerns.

Organizing an event at short notice would be “challenging” and demand would be too much, a spokesperson said. They said the authority supported the city’s venues and said places screening the match could be found online.

Pubs in the city will be able to stay open for an extra two hours on Sunday night, until 1am. Venues with an ‘on-licence’ to sell booze until 11pm can do so on Sunday, July 14.

That is under a change to national license rules for the last matches of the tournament and only applies if England or Scotland are playing.

A spokesperson said: “There are no plans to screen Sunday’s Euro 2024 final in the city center. We support Coventry’s hospitality venues and encourage football fans to enjoy matches at the venues in the city that are screening the games.

“Those venues can be found on the Visit Coventry Website. Organizing any event at relatively short notice would always be challenging for logistical and licensing reasons, but the overwhelming challenge would be safety.

“The safety of those attending must be the number one priority, and such is the interest to watch the game, demand is likely to outstrip any capacity we could offer in the city center. The England team has the support of Coventry, and we wish them the very best of luck in the final.”
