Super League Disciplinary: Seven players charged, including controversial ban for Wigan Warriors star

The 11th round of the Super League is over, which means that the teams will anticipate the verdicts of the Super League match review committee.

Last week, five players were charged, with Catalan duo Ben Garcia and Julien Bousquet receiving fines alongside Jake Trueman and Peta Hiku.

Andy Ackers’ curious “other adverse conduct” charge won’t result in any further action, but could spell trouble further down the line for any other charges.

This week, we saw three yellow cards and two reds handed out, meaning further action was always likely.

St Helens’ Tommy Makinson was sent off for a shoulder to the head by Tex Hoy, while Wigan Warriors’ Liam Byrne, also booked for an overhead kick, was shown a yellow card.

Castleford Tigers’ Liam Horne was also sent off for a dangerous tackle, which referee Jack Smith said put the opposition in a “really, really dangerous position”.

One of the other yellow cards handed out was to Esan Marsters, whose trip late in the Huddersfield defeat did little to change the humiliating result. Meanwhile, Jordan Lane, whose Hull FC side lost to winless London Broncos, was the last man to be booked by the referee after a late tackle.

That wasn’t the only incident in that game, though Chris Kendall reported an incident where he revealed that “inappropriate words” were used, meaning a player in that game could be looking at a lengthy ban similar to Josh McGuire from Warrington Wolves. the last season.

The biggest losers from this week’s match review committee decisions are Wigan Warriors, who will lose Liam Byrne for two games for a grade C head contact charge.

The Ireland international misses two rather than one as he is at the top end of the sanctioning scale due to previous charges this season.

He will therefore miss the Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR this weekend, despite Matt Peet saying he is confident he will be available for selection.

Although Byrne’s shot was deemed worthy of an on-field yellow and Tommy Makinson was shown a red card, the Saints interaction’s Grade C head charge only ruled him out of the game.

Elsewhere, Liam Horne, out for Castleford Tigers, will miss a game with a grade C dangerous throwing/lifting charge.

Ashton Golding of Huddersfield Giants and Grade B Head Contact Will Lovell of London Broncos were only fined £250.

Also fined £250 were Hull FC’s Jordan Lane for Grade B dangerous contact and Huddersfield’s Esan Marsters for Grade B ‘Other Misconduct’ after being told to leave the field for a trip later against Wigan.

Hull FC’s Herman Ese’ese has been cited for verbal abuse and the RFL is still investigating.
