The race is on for the £17m redevelopment of Leicester station

The council has already successfully secured £17.6 million from the Government’s Leveling Fund to help deliver ambitious plans to revitalize the landmark building and create a more attractive and accessible gateway to the city.

Now the city council, Network Rail and East Midlands Railway have started the bidding race for a two-stage design and build contract worth £17m.

Under the plans, the station’s main entrance will be moved from London Road to Station Street to create a new public square with rainwater gardens and new tree plantings.

A new curved ramp, steps and elevator will provide access to the new entrance and main concourse ticket hall

The council also hopes the project will reveal the original face of the Grade II listed historic building.

The firm has until June 10 to submit applications with a shortlist invited to tender by July 5. For more information click here.

The Mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, said: “Leicester Station is a landmark building, but as a vital transport hub, it needs radical refurbishment to meet the needs of a modern city of Leicester’s size.

“We have worked closely with our rail industry partners and listened carefully to public feedback as we progress and develop these ambitious plans which will improve the station and revitalize this important gateway to our city.”
