Liverpool ‘in control’ as Real Madrid star casts doubt over future

Liverpool are rumored to be keeping tabs on a Real Madrid star after the player cast doubt over his future despite an impressive campaign with the Spanish giants, helping them lift the league and Champions League titles.

New Reds boss Arne Slot is keen to make his mark on the squad by bringing in new faces this summer and reports have already suggested the Dutchman is eyeing Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin as a potential transfer target.

The Ukrainian played a major role in Los Blancos’ domestic and continental success last season, making 31 appearances and registering 12 clean sheets in all competitions and was instrumental in helping Real reach the Champions League final after which saved the penalties of Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic. the quarter-final penalty shoot-out against Manchester City.

Lunin also has 13 caps for Ukraine and started their opening match at Euro 2024 this summer in a 3-0 defeat to Romania. Since returning from the Germany tour, however, Lunin has addressed his future at Real Madrid saying whether he stays or leaves is in the hands of the Spanish giants.

The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract since signing from Ukrainian outfit Zorya Luhansk in 2018 and is attracting plenty of interest as a result. Real Madrid must now decide whether to extend his current contract or sell him this summer, rather than let him leave for nothing in 12 months’ time.

Speaking about his future to Spanish outlet Marca, Lunin said: “We’ll see, we’ll see… We’ll know in just a little while.”

Pressed on whether he wants to stay at Real Madrid, he added: “Of course, but… The only thing I can say is that everything was going well for me to stay and now the ball is in Real Madrid’s court. all I can say about my future is now in their hands.”

According to Spanish news outlet Sport, via CaughtOffside, Liverpool have already made contact over a summer swoop for the 6ft 3in goalkeeper. While Alisson remains No.1 at Anfield, recent reports have suggested the Brazilian could leave for Saudi Arabia this month, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr making him a priority target.

With Adrian also leaving the Reds, that leaves only Caoimhin Kelleher as the only reasonable option between the sticks for Slot – and even then the Irishman could leave this summer. With that in mind, Liverpool remain keen to sign a new stopper ahead of the new season and Lunin could soon become their number one target.
