The mind-boggling stats behind Ethan Havard’s performance

Wigan Warriors representative Ethan Havard produced a mammoth display in the middle of the park in their derby win against St Helens.

The 23-year-old played completely 80 front-row minutes in Wigan’s 16-12 win over rivals St Helens on Friday night: and his stats are as impressive as his minutes.

Havard, who came through the club’s academy, did amazing 50 approach, with 10 of these being from the marker position. He also made an impressive 21 carry, break four addresses in the process.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The England international is known for playing big minutes, but 80 minutes in the middle in a Wigan-Saints derby? It’s nothing short of phenomenal and deserves all the praise it gets.

Loves Rugby League He caught up with Havard himself after the game and was as modest as ever when asked about his 80-minute spell.

“I loved it,” Havard said. “It was physical in the middle, Saints’ speed and aggressiveness with their wickets was strong as always, but I think we equalised.

“My body feels good. Obviously it takes some big contact out of you and stuff, but that’s what we train for, so it’s something we’re used to.

“It (fitness) is probably something I work on quite a bit. I think fitness is pretty important, but I’ll play as long as Matty (Peet) wants me to play, so I’ll keep turning up.

“I find myself spinning a little bit in the game (the longer minutes I’m playing), but it’s just doing the best I can in the time I’m in.

“Both teams were missing a few players but I think everyone who played put in a great performance. It was an intense game, as any derby should be, so I’m sure it was good to watch.”

Wigan’s strength in depth, particularly in the forward pack, has been a major talking point this season: and Havard says competition for Matt Peet’s 17 places can only be a good thing for everyone’s development.

“I think it’s good, healthy competition is obviously important,” Havard added.

“You know if you don’t turn up for a game you might not play next week, that’s obviously in your mind, so it makes us honest in our performances and we train hard together, we like to learn from each other . others, so it’s a good camp.”

Wigan’s win over St Helens moved them four points clear of second-placed Warrington Wolves at the top of the Super League table, with the Warriors having a game in hand which is against Leigh Leopards.
