Williams has a current release clause of around $62m (£49m/€57m) in the contract he signed in December, which is a more than affordable fee for a club the size of of Liverpool. But after a staggering euro and a long list of potential suitors, the total fee to sign him could be much higher, factoring in agent fees and an overall package of personal terms, if a transfer battle ensues.

While Williams’ stock has risen at Euro 2024 and could continue to do so if Spain win the tournament this weekend, the release clause means clubs such as Liverpool already know how much he would cost in terms of transfer fee with his current club . Once the release clause is cleared, Liverpool or other interested parties would need to negotiate personal terms for the youngster.

The Athletic winger earns a reported $216,000-a-week (£170,000/€200,000) at the Spanish club, which could cause some headaches in the wage structure. The reason Williams’ wages are so high is because of the unique transfer policy the club operates.
