Community Life Month celebrated at the raising of the Cornwall flag

Community Living Stormont County saw many supporters outside Cornwall Town Hall on Thursday cheering on a member who raised the flag in honor of Community Living Month.

Community Living operates 119 associations across the province and supports people of all ages with developmental disabilities. For decades, May has been recognized as Community Living Month in an effort to raise awareness of genuine inclusion efforts for people with developmental disabilities.

“The reason we recognized May as Community Living Month is because we believe that people with developmental disabilities deserve to be heard like anyone else in the community, where they can live and socialize,” said Community Living Stormont Executive Director Michelle Alguire .

Funded through the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, Alguire said Community Living Stormont operates 24/7 group homes in the area, as well as apartment settings where residents have occasional support available if needed. The organization also assists members with employment opportunities.

“We have many members making minimum wage or more who work in our community,” said Alguire, commenting on the positive social impact of genuine inclusion in our community.

Several events are taking place for Community Living Month in our area, including a Rod Stewart tribute dance and a fundraiser on May 18 at Agora Centra, which is scheduled for features a live and silent auction and more. Then on May 21 at the Ramada Inn, a young author living with autism and former Community Living board chair will talk about his personal journey.

In SDG, Community Living also operates in Glengarry and Dundas counties.

“Community Living Stormont provides an important service in our community, enabling people to live in their own homes and lead normal lives. It is important to the dignity and independence of individuals and is a valuable service in our community,” said Mayor Justin Towndale.
