ITV’s Joan, starring Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner, comes to ITV after filming in Coventry

A Coventry-filmed drama series starring an Emmy-winning actress will soon be broadcast on ITV. Joan will appear on TV screens in September.

Actress Sophie Turner, who attended Kings High in Warwick, will take on the role of real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington, focusing on her transformation from petty thief to criminal mastermind in 1980s London. She embarks on a thrilling journey, high-stakes that challenges him to his every limit, ITV said.




Filming for the six-part series took place on Hay Lane in Coventry and Regent Street in Leamington Spa. Scenes were also filmed in Herne Bay and the West Midlands.

Created by Anna Symon, the new series will trace Hannington’s life, beginning in his 20s as a “fiery, uncompromising and intoxicating character” who had a troubled childhood. When her husband runs away, she takes the opportunity to create a new life for herself and her young daughter Kelly.

Ahead of its premiere later this year, ITV released a trailer for the series, which Turner also shared on Instagram. It starts with Joan looking directly at the camera, before cutting to a montage of stunning disguises, to which the Game of Thrones star captioned: “There she is.”

Joan will premiere on ITV1 and streaming service ITVX in September, while in the United States it will be available to watch on The CW. Turner will star alongside Frank Dillane, known for his role as Nick Clark in Fear the Walking Dead, Kirsty J Curtis in Harlots and Gershwyn Eustache Jnr in the hit BBC series I May Destroy You.

Speaking about the upcoming ITV series, Turner said: “I am so excited to bring the fascinating story of Joan Hannington’s life to the screen in Joan. She is one of the most notorious figures in London’s criminal underworld, earning her the nickname “The Godmother”.
