The Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff has been plagued not only by multiple injuries throughout the season, but by expected contributors struggling, which in turn has led to an overstretch.

Although the Dodgers are on the verge of entering the All-Star break, they face the prospect of a potential bullpen game in the series finale against the Detroit Tigers as they are shortstop.

A potential option to help get through the day and can serve as organizational depth up front in Brent Honeywell.

Conformable Mark Feinsand of MLB.comThe Dodgers claimed Honeywell off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates:

Honeywell was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday as a corresponding move to activate Marco Gonzales from the 60-day injured list.

The right-hander spent less than a week with the Pirates and appeared in just two games. Honeywell threw a scoreless inning in his 2024 debut and allowed one run over 2.1 innings on July 10.

Honeywell’s addition to the Dodgers organization marks a reunion with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Honeywell in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, months before Friedman was hired to lead the Dodgers’ front office.

Brent Honeywell’s Minor League Stats

While in the Pirates’ Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate this season, Honeywell went 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 31 games. He pitched to a 19.6% strikeout rate and 10.1% walk rate in those appearances.

Overall in his Minor League career, the 29-year-old is 37-30 with nine saves and a 3.43 ERA in 158 games (97 starts) over parts of eight seasons.

Honeywell’s career has included four surgeries on his right elbow since 2017. Those procedures were Tommy John surgery, ulnar nerve decompression, surgery to repair and stabilize an elbow fracture and an arthroscopic procedure that Rays described “to relieve slight discomfort”.

Honeywell is out of minor league options, which would require the Dodgers to DFA him if he is added to the active roster and must be removed at some point.
