Andy Street was “personally devastated” by the loss of the West Midlands mayor

Andy Street said he was “personally devastated” by the loss of the West Midlands mayor. He was speaking to Sky News after losing his position in the region in a nail-biting count on Saturday.

Coventry has turned out to be the director for Labor Richard Parker after a recount of votes cast in the city took place. This led to the Labor candidate taking over from Mr Street, who had been mayor since May 2017.

Parker won by 1,500 votes, bringing his total to 225,590 votes, just ahead of Street’s 224,082. It was a result that sent shock waves across the country.

Speaking to Sky News after the result, Andy Street was asked by presenter Sophy Ridge if he was disappointed. He said, “Well, of course. I mean, disappointed is an understatement, but we’ll go with it.”

She went on to add: “You say disappointed is an understatement. What word would you choose then?” to which Mr Street replied: “I suppose I’m personally devastated.”

Labor leader Keir Starmer described Mr Parker’s victory as “phenomenal” and Mr Parker will now have the West Midlands, covering Coventry, Birmingham, Solihull, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall.
