Chris Davies accepts transfer after Birmingham City’s first friendly

Chris Davies says Birmingham City need to make “more” new signings to shore up their lightweight squad.

Two Blues XIs played 45 minutes each in a 5-0 defeat of SC Paderborn 07 on Saturday to open the pre-season campaign. All four of the club’s signings so far featured in a game that highlighted the Blues’ lack of strength in depth.

The Blues need to strengthen all over the park, but especially in defence, where there are two centre-backs and potentially two full-backs if Manny Longelo completes a move away from St Andrew’s.

“I think we need more,” admitted Blues boss Davies. “I wouldn’t give a definitive figure, but we need at least more. Obviously we only have 12-13 senior players with us so that tells you something. In a team of 25 people, you’ll need a few more.

“This is an ongoing process day by day, week by week that we are working on, but the encouraging thing is that the players we have brought in so far are looking very good in terms of their training and adaptation to our environment. Their performances today were positive. If we can bring more of that, then we’ll be fine.”

The youngsters are likely to get more chances against Solihull Moors and Shrewsbury Town next week as the Blues’ preparations for the League One season ramp up.
