Sam Tomkins mocks the significance of the Hull derby

What you believe is ‘the biggest derby in Super League’ is very dependent on which side of the Pennines you hail from, in spite of the fact there is only one true ‘cross-city’ derby. However, pundit Sam Tomkins has made his view clear as he’s mocked the relevance of the Hull FC and Hull KR derby game.

Of course, that’s expected given that Sam Tomkins played 213 times for Wigan Warriors and will have taken part in countless derbies against St Helens. While working the game between Wigan and Saints last night, he even declared that “Wigan are too good” as he claimed that they would be locking up the League Leaders Shield this season with ease.

It’s fair to say that his comments can therefore be taken with a pinch of salt but whilst covering Thursday night’s game between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos for Sky Sports, the ex-England captain could not help himself from taking another shot at Hull FC and Hull KR.

Assessing the match, Sam Tomkins said: “It’s a huge occasion, (but) it is the second biggest rivalry in Super League.

“I think Hull KR will be too strong. I thought they were unlucky to lose last week, they had a chance to win that game against Catalans.

“I just don’t think FC have got it in them. They are just not consistent in any way and Hull KR are really forming something good at that club.”

Former Hull FC forward Jon Wilkin agreed, claiming: “Hull KR all the way. They are on the march this year to do something special. They were disappointing last week but I think they will be great in a derby game.”

The assessments of both Sam Tomkins and Jon Wilkin would suggest that Hull FC would have to put in a near-perfect performance to upset the odds and beat their cross-city rivals. It would potentially even have to be ‘the performance of the year’, something that Tomkins recently declared belonged to Castleford Tigers.

Traveling to The Totally Wicked Stadium last week, Castleford upset the odds and beat Paul Wellens’ side 8-6 in a very tense affair. More impressive than the win on the road was the fact that just six weeks prior, Cas were on the end of a 60-4 loss to the Saints.

Sam Tomkins was quick to declare the Round 16 win for the Tigers as the ‘performance of the year’, stating: “I think Cas is going to be flying. They produced last weekend the performance of the year and the result of the year against St Helens.

“Everybody wrote them off last week. Not many teams go to Saints and win but they ground it out and were the better team on the night.

“I think they will be flying and they will go down to London and get a convincing win.”

They did exactly that, winning 34-20 with Innes Senior and Tex Hoy once again causing havoc running out of the back-field.
