The warmer weather comes as forecasters predict there could be a heatwave in parts of the UK as temperatures soar to 31C. Forecasters said “some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching heatwave conditions”.

The values must remain for three consecutive days to be classified as a heat wave. A yellow health alert also came into effect across much of England today.

The alert, issued jointly by the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office, came into force at 8am and will remain in place until 5pm on Thursday. It covers all but one region of England, and highlights the risk of increased pressure on healthcare services as a result of the warm weather.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Esslick previously said: “According to the latest models there is a chance of temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius. It’s not guaranteed, but this is likely to happen towards the south east of England, particularly towards London, Essex and Kent.”

He added: “My advice to people would be, by all means, go out and enjoy yourself. They waited for the summer.

“But UV levels will be high and the sun will be very intense. Wear protection such as sunscreen, stay hydrated and try to get some shade in the midday sun. People who are sensitive to the sun should take special precautions.”

Dan Rudman, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching heatwave conditions. next week parts of the uk are likely to hit heat wave thresholds.

“However, whether or not everyone is experiencing heatwave thresholds, most of the UK will experience the hottest temperatures this year.”
