Melton’s busy road will be closed for six weeks

A busy road is set to close for six weeks as part of work to build a city bypass. Scalford Road in Melton will close at 6am on Monday (July 15) to allow contractors to build a new roundabout for the North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (NEMMDR).

The closure will take place between the Stapleford Heights development and Holwell Lane, near John Ferneley College, Leicestershire County Council said. The authority said the road closure is planned to coincide with the start of the school and university holidays, and will last until 8pm on Sunday 25 August.

The council said the work could not be completed with a partial lane closure due to “the narrowness of the road, the removal of the existing road and the carrying out of excavation work”. It added that the closure was necessary so that Galliford Try contractors could complete the roundabout “without the need for further closures on this stretch of road in the future”.

The authority said that if additional work is needed, for example the installation of signs and light poles, there is a “contingency” for the temporary installation of traffic lights in two directions from Tuesday, August 27 to Friday, September 13. Janna Walker, deputy chief executive at Leicestershire County Council, said: “There have been face-to-face visits from Galliford Try and letters sent to residents and business owners to try to provide as much notice as possible.

“We have also worked closely with the college to ensure we minimize any disruption in the final days of the term.” Burton Road, Melton, will also be closed until 7pm on Sunday 25 August.
