Crysencio Summerville’s options dwindling as Leeds United face an unexpected possibility

The tears didn’t even dry following Leeds United’s Wembley heartbreak when the disappointment was overshadowed by the expectation that Crysencio Summerville would leave the club this summer. The 24-year-old Dutchman set the Championship alight last season with his goals and performances en route to being crowned the division’s player of the year.

Leeds’ failure to make an immediate return to the Premier League opened the door for Summerville’s exit, with the player expected to have walked through that door by now. And yet, with pre-season about to enter its second week and Leeds’ first game of the summer fast approaching, Summerville finds himself on familiar ground at Thorp Arch, working with his Whites team-mates to prepare for the new campaign.

For all the talk of interest from Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United on these shores and Paris St Germain across the channel, only Brighton and Hove Albion have registered any firm interest in the player. Aston Villa have completed a deal for Hull City star player Jaden Philogene for £13m over a clause in the contract that sent him to Hull in the first place, ruling the Villains out of a move to Summerville.

Chelsea have added rising Brazilian star Estevai Willian, 17, to their winger options for next season and appear to have kept Summerville quiet, but the latest update is the most interesting.

There are increasing reports that Brighton have become frustrated with a deadlock in their approach to Summerville and have moved on from any potential deal, withdrawing their interest in the player. This would narrow the list of potential moves and mean there is currently no registered interest in Summerville.

Leeds are in no position to have to sell after the £40m deal that took Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur and will play hardball if interested parties emerge. There is still time for that to happen, but the current lack of interest undoubtedly increases the chances of the winger still being at Leeds for the new season. It may only be a small chance, but the chances of a departure increase every day.
