Simon Grix’s assessment in two words as Hull FC lose their third derby of the year

Hull FC lost their third and final derby of the season in what has been a miserable campaign for the Black and Whites. Ten games into his tenure as caretaker manager, Simon Grix responded by claiming he needed a “team that delivers”, chastising the players for failing to follow instructions.

Back at home, there were some Hull KR fans fearing an upset could be on the cards, with the Robins having let performance slip of late with their last two games dragged to the golden point. As for FC, the loss to Salford came on the back of missed conversions, while they have been unlucky against the likes of Huddersfield and Warrington in recent weeks.

Any chance of a home win went out the window very early, however, as Willie Peters’ side learned their lesson from last week and started at a blistering pace. Hull FC were 18-0 behind in the first 20 minutes, taking the unanswered points tally at the MKM Stadium for KR to 116, a pretty incredible performance.

It was the same old story for Simon Grix, who oversaw just one win in his ten games in caretaker charge. It’s something he showed in just two words when he spoke to BBC Humberside after the game.

Asked to gauge his feelings following the 24-10 loss, Grix said bluntly: “Frustrated. Again.”

After witnessing a Friday night derby in which Wigan Warriors and St Helens traded blows for 80 minutes, it would be easy to forget that Hull FC versus Hull KR is the only Super League cross-town derby, such were the efforts weak from the beginning. black and white.

Hull KR were clearly outplayed for 60 minutes of play but luckily for them they managed to win the game inside the first 20. Simon Grix bemoaned the slow start while speaking to BBC Humberside.

“It didn’t look like I felt it was a derby and 18-0 down gives you a long way back against such a good team but we came back and showed a bit but I’m tired of talking about energy and all that.

“If we don’t get smarter and start playing the way we practice for longer periods of time, it’s going to keep happening to us.”

More frustrating for the caretaker manager was the belief that the players had abandoned any game plan, perhaps overcome by the excitement of the derby. Grix held the players accountable as he labeled his team “not good enough”.

He argued: “We’re not doing what we practice and we’re not a good enough side, as harsh as that sounds, or true, but we’re not good enough to turn up on Sunday and just slog along. in and out of a plan I’ve been working on all week.

“Guys have to be responsible for that, and they will, but we’re bare bones as well, so it’s not like we can cut and change everything. But I need a team that goes out there and delivers what they practice.”

Another interesting side note to the game which is sure to go to disciplinary action is Elliot Minchella’s allegation that Brad Fash grabbed his testicles, something which could leave Hull FC even on the ‘bare bones’ should the chubby man be prohibited.

Not only was it a loss that bruised the egos of the club’s players and fans, it was a defeat that saw two senior players injured which will see Hull FC face champions Wigan next week .

Grix explained: “We lost Sutty early on to an HIA but I thought Davey came on and did a really good job in that period. He looked threatening with the ball and then we lost Los (Carlos Tuimavave) at half-time.

“Obviously he had hamstring problems. He felt a little bit this week but because of where we are in terms of numbers, bodies and senior bodies if you will, he played and got to the break but he didn’t feel too good about it.

“He started to get cold at half-time and I wanted to avoid another injury. I think he’s been there too many times. We’re making it tough right now, but it is what it is. We can’t complain about that. No one else feels sorry for us. There’s no point in doing that.”

Confirming that former club captain Tuimavave will almost certainly miss the game against Wigan, Grix reflected on the positives, noting the impressive performance of substitute Davey Litten, another youngster FC must rely on this season.

“Carlos is definitely a doubt for Wigan. Not sure if I caught anything more serious than that, though, thankfully. So, yeah, we’ll look at that during the week, but if Carlos isn’t there, that’s absolutely fine. I thought Davey did a great job and gave us what he got today, so that’s going to be the fix for us.”
