Birmingham Police and Mayor Woodfin issue official statements after 24 violent hours.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Police Department on Sunday issued an official statement asking for the community’s support after multiple homicides and what BPD calls “senseless acts of violence” occurred Saturday.

The following statement was obtained via a press release from Public Information Officer Truman Fitzgerald:

The Birmingham Police Department stands with our community in this time of grief and loss as we witness senseless acts of violence in the city of Birmingham. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and everyone affected.

In the face of such a tragedy, we remain resolute in our mission to ensure justice for the victims. We are working tirelessly to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice. The Birmingham Police Department is dedicated to protecting our community and restoring a sense of safety and security.

Your support and cooperation is essential in our efforts to create a safer Birmingham. If you have any information that can assist us in our investigations, please come forward.

Together, we will make a difference.

At least seven people were killed in Birmingham on Saturday 13 July.

One incident was a triple homicide involving a woman and her 5-year-old son.

Four other people were killed in a shooting at a private nightclub where a birthday party was being celebrated. Nine others were injured in the incident, according to police.

Both incidents happened within six hours of each other.

Mayor Randall Woodfin also released a statement on his Facebook page condemning the acts.

In a 2024 study by US News, Birmingham was ranked the fourth most dangerous city in the United States, beating cities such as Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
