Swansea City news tonight as the Swans play on Sheffield United’s radar and Jerry Yates brutally admits

Here are the Swansea City headlines for Sunday 14th July.

Grimes wanted by Sheffield United

Sheffield United are reportedly lining up a move for Swansea skipper Matt Grimes.

The Blades are in a precarious position amid ongoing takeover talks which have dragged on for some time. Manager Chris Wilder is in dire need of financial support to rebuild his squad after relegation.

With several players leaving at the end of their contracts and key members likely to be poached by higher league sides, Sheffield United’s squad looks pretty weak.

However, it appears that potential targets have been identified, with potential new owners aiming high.

In a Patreon post, reporter Alan Nixon claims the American group bidding for the club have identified players they could sign if the takeover goes through. Those on the wishlist are said to include Swansea captain Matt Grimes and Norwich City’s Kenny McLean.

Grimes, 28, is one of the best midfielders in the division and is vital to Swansea’s plans, having committed his future to the club until 2027. It would take a serious fee to prize him away from the south Wales.

Yates: I didn’t have a good season at the Swans

Jerry Yates admitted it “didn’t work out” for him at Swansea and knew a summer exit was in the offing after a difficult season in south Wales.

The striker signed from Blackpool and scored eight league goals throughout the campaign but never really looked like he had settled. At the end of the season, it was no surprise, really, that he ended up sealing a move to Derby on a season-long loan.

“I half knew it was on the cards,” he told DerbyshireLive of the move. “I wouldn’t say we had a good season there – it was a learning curve so to speak. We didn’t do well at the start under new gaffer Michael Duff, we struggled a bit and were in a bit of a pic. of a relegation battle.

“Swansea at the time wanted to promote, I completely understand that. There were a lot of changes at the club and, as I say, things don’t work out sometimes. It just didn’t work out for me and maybe a couple of others.”

Looking forward, Yates is keen to take the chance at Derby, who are aiming to build on their promotion success from the previous season. He is optimistic about the future, saying, “I worked hard in the offseason and I’m ready to go.

“I’m looking to help the boys and help them win games. I’ll see where the season takes us. Ipswich went back-to-back and won promotion. I look at their team and there was a lot of unity and I see similar attributes. and in our dressing room, so why not?

Ashley Williams: Swans need players

Swansea legend Ashley Williams believes the club must add quality this summer if they are to improve after last season’s disappointment.

The Swans have endured a dismal start to the last term under Michael Duff, but there have been green shoots of positivity following the mid-season arrival of Luke Williams and he has led the club to a respectable 14th place.

But speaking to Coin Poker, Williams said: “I’m sure Luke Williams wants to get some more bodies in the door. Whether that happens or not, it’s always difficult for Swansea to attract players just because of where they are. you don’t pay the most money so it’s always hard.

“I think Luke can help the situation just by doing what he did towards the end of the season. And I don’t mean the results, just the connection between him and the fans and the team and the fans. If I look at it. The second derby game against him Cardiff at home, more days, more afternoons or more evenings like that with that kind of show of commitment and intent from the team will help bring the fans back to the side and then it becomes a lot smoother for him I think they have need some players, need to strengthen the defense a bit, but there are good players there.

“I was very disappointed with the way the season went for Swansea last year, as a big Swansea fan, like all Swansea fans, it was just disappointing, it was flat. Cardiff at home.

“So a good start for Luke would be essential and I’m sure he’s working hard to try and get bodies through the door, but like I said, having been there for so long, I know how frustrating it can be at times. , because there aren’t many players jumping, especially foreign players, who don’t know where it is or you look at it and it’s quite far from anywhere else, so they have to work a bit harder than other clubs to get players in the.”

Luke Williams: Players will be better for Swindon win

Luke Williams believes his side gained valuable match experience from their competitive pre-season clash against Swindon.

The Swans secured a 3-1 win in the closed-door friendly at Fairwood with goals from Liam Cullen, Matt Grimes and Mykola Kuharevich.

Cullen opened the scoring early with a neat finish, followed by Grimes’ penalty after Ollie Cooper was fouled. Kuharevich added a third shortly after Jaxon Brown scored for Swindon.

Despite admitting there is a lot to do, Williams was pleased with certain aspects of the game.

“It was necessary because the players worked very hard. I think they needed to go and play against live opposition,” the Swans boss said.

“It was a really good exercise for both teams, so we’re happy with that. They did a lot of double sessions so I think there was a lot of frustration for the players to clear the opposition today.

“They’ve come through really well in terms of how hard they’ve been prepared to work and some of the ideas we’ve put into training.

“The two periods were quite different. I felt the first half was very impressive and the second half was a bit more difficult for us, but it means there are things we can try to help with when we strip the game down to show the players on camera. . We have everything to learn from now on.”
