Residents urged to support local businesses

COVENTRY residents are being urged to support independent businesses in the city centre.

The town center is home to more than 80 independent businesses – a new campaign has been launched to give business a boost.

Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) is asking people to show their support by shopping local and sharing their positive experiences.

Five independent businesses have closed downtown since the start of the year, including Cafe Morso, The Cat Lounge, Chameleon, Metropolis and Bean and Brunch.

Three new independent businesses have opened in the town center – CV1 Ltd Menswear, Quick Feast and Phone Matters, all of which have been open to customers in the past seven months.

The Coventry BID campaign was launched on Independence Day on July 4 – the national day of action – to encourage support for independent businesses across the UK.

A new artwork is to be installed in the Cat Ballou storefront, which includes a QR code, making it easier for visitors to discover all of his independent businesses.

Coventry BID manager Joanne Glover said: “It’s no secret that the last few years have been really tough for business and small, family-run, independent businesses have been some of the hardest hit.

“We have an incredible selection of independents in Coventry, each adding unique value to our offer and it’s a massive blow every time someone has to close their doors.

“They keep our local economy vibrant and diverse and it is essential that we support them.

“Whether it’s the retailer with specialist knowledge and excellent customer service, the cozy cafe or restaurant that offers a personal touch, or the live music and entertainment venue that offers an unforgettable experience.

“We’re simply looking for Coventrians and visitors to the city center to spread the word via social media and word of mouth about the amazing independent businesses we have.”
