Gareth Southgate’s favorite fish and chip shop – and obviously it’s in Yorkshire

A nostalgic tweet has revealed England manager Gareth Southgate’s favorite fish and chip shop – and it’s obviously in Yorkshire. The national team gaffer is apparently a Wetherby Whaler fan, as an old tweet that recently resurfaced shows.

“Hard to beat Wetherby Whaler for fish and chips,” he tweeted in December 2011. At the time, Southgate was between jobs, leaving his role at Middlesbrough two years earlier.

The Wetherby Whaler, which has chains in York, Guiseley, Wakefield and Pudsey, has previously shared its support amid World Cup excitement. The venue replied to Southgate: “Thank you Sir Gareth – best Thursday back! Gareth Southgate, you, your staff and the players are always welcome at Wetherby Whaler! Come on England!”, reports Teesside Live.

Established by Phillip and Janine Murphy in Tadcaster in 1969, Wetherby Whaler is a family business comprising fish and chip restaurants and takeaways. The inaugural Wetherby Whaler branch opened in Wetherby in 1989.

Today, the company has a workforce of 220 full-time and part-time employees across its five outlets and serves approximately 750,000 portions of haddock annually.

In 2023 it was voted one of the best chip shops in Yorkshire by readers of Yorkshire Live.
