Prince William is building a massive 2,500-home estate in Kent

As next in line to the throne, there are plenty of duties and obligations to uphold. Cutting the ribbon, shaking hands, giving speeches and the like. But a job requirement you might not have expected? Urbanism.

Before coming to the throne, King Charles III wrote an entire book on British architecture and supported two suburban developments in the Duchy of Cornwall: Poundbury in Dorset and Nansledan in Cornwall.

Now Prince William, who has taken over as Duke of Cornwall, is following in his footsteps. The prince is leading a third development near Faversham in Kent.

A planning application for the South East Faversham development was submitted by the Duchy of Cornwall earlier this month. If approved, the project includes 2,500 homes with at least 875 affordable homes organized around “ancient paths and landscape”. A minimum of 400 homes will be earmarked for social rent in an effort to tackle homelessness in the area.

With an emphasis on green space and air quality, the plans also include Faversham Football Club and Faversham Cricket Club, along with orchards, allotments, meadows and wooded cycle paths. The area will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

South East Faversham was announced when King Charles was still in charge of the Duchy and has been in the works for the past six years.

A spokesman for the Duchy of Cornwall said: “South East Faversham will be an attractive, modern and pleasant place for people to live, work, shop and relax. It will be guided by local needs and inspired by the character of Faversham.’
